Rabbit On The Run SS 2010

There is something about French designer/artist Julie Thevenot's line"Rabbit On the Run" that's going to make you want every last peice of her collection. She established her brand in 2008 focusing mainly on experimentation and research in large format cutting and folding techniques and developing an unexpected symmetry. Dominating her line are Navajo and Ethnic Patterns and prints over natural materials like silks and organic cottons.

The reworked shapes become singular and visually challenging, synthesizing primitive iconography with ultra contemporary/cosmic ideation. Production of the prints are hand-made, and the cuts are familiar yet over-sized, conceived with neutral & natural materials in mind to complement the motifs. Rabbit On The Run opens itself to boundless sources of inspiration maintaining a jubilant, playful, futuristic, and distinctive sensibility.

Julie Thevenot holds a MFA from the National Superior School of Decorative arts of Paris and integrates her artistic training into her working process. Managing to find her own space in the creative world, she opts not to adopt habits of the archetypal fashion designers. Thevenot left Paris for New York City where she felt a kinship with its « always-on » functionality and supportive energy within a competitive environment.

"Grey Gardens Revisited" from Baum Und Pferdgarten SS2010

Baum und Pferdgarten take the road less travelled and bring us a new interpretation of the disenchanted lives from the 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens. Much like vintage clothing, this collection breathes new life into the clothes through eclectic and eccentric embellishments and an exaggerated use of textured fabrics and prints. The designers, Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave, thoughtfully took every bright moment from the film and infused it into this season and remind us to “be bold and celebrate the moment, wherever life’s brilliantly unpredictable road takes you.”

The cult classic film, Grey Gardens detailed the lives of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Their weathered lives could not disguise their elegant bravado and perfect disharmony that naturally attributed to their status as unconventional style icons.

The Spring/Summer 2010 Collection perfects the disheveled socialite look by using luxury fabrics that have been washed through to create a worn and beach inspired aesthetic. Several pieces are made in light cotton lace, subdued brocade, hammered silk resembling ceramic surfaces, and notably a carefully constructed interwoven fabric made of wool, chenille, and velvet yarn that is made in both a stunning boucle jacket and a selection of knits. Additionally, staple pieces are made in classic suede, corduroy, and khaki that also pay homage to an era that wore it best.

Several of the silhouettes are organically constructed in a shapeless and slightly avant-garde fashion that begs to be exaggerated with layers. In combination with the feather light material, an emphasis on ethnic details and abstractions on animal prints creates the perfect canvas for glamorously understated global couture. In turn, these are contradicted by a selection of nautical inspired tailored pieces in familiar stripes, checks and multi-toned blues. An abundance of dazed flower prints, patterns, and a colour scheme that ranges from bright and bold to muted and neutral complete this assembly of perfect day to evening wears.

In signature Baum und Pferdgarten style, the creativity is found in the details. Frills and ruffles are accentuated in a volang method and broderie anglaise is studded with rhinestones. Gold is a shining element found in ribbon accents and visible zippers and buckles. Expect unexpected elements such as the traditional boucle jacket trimmed in a unique multicoloured plastic composition. These eclectic and eccentric touches add several definitive textural elements that bring a uniquely charismatic interpretation of the collection. (Top Photo:Methine Silk Cream Blouse)
